PSP Tutorials - Icon Masks

What you will need: An Icon, An Icon Mask and Graphics Software that supports layers.

Step 1 Firstly, open your icon(File >> Open >> Browse for file >> Select correct one >> Okay) in the graphics programme you are using(must support layers). It can be any size, depending on the size of the mask. For this tutorial I shall be using an icon with a 100 pixel width and a 100 pixel height, as that is the size of my icon mask.

Step 2 Next, open your icon mask in a new document. (File >> Open >> Browse for file >> Select correct one >> Okay). You should now have both the icon and the icon mask open in seperate documents.

Step 3 Make sure your icon mask is open and copy it. (Edit >> Copy) or (Ctrl and C).

Step 4 Minimize your icon mask, and open back up your icon. Past the copied icon mask as a new layer. (Edit >> Paste as a new layer) or (Ctrl and L). Change the names of your layers. You can either do this by right clicking and selecting the correct option or click one on the text by the thumbnail. It should then change to a textbox, and you can type in the name of your layers. My layer with the icon on is called Icon, and the layer with the Icon Mask(which should be above the Icon Layer) is called Mask.

Step 5 Make sure your on your Mask layer(if it's selected it should be blue where as the Icon layer should be grey. Next to the word 'Normal' click the drop down, and select 'Screen'.

Step 6 Merge the two layers together. (Layers >> Merge >> Merge Visible / Flatten).
